Lima,Nicholas Costa Barroso; Soares,André Elias Rodrigues; Almeida,Luiz Gonzaga de Paula; Costa,Igor Rodrigues da; Sato,Fernanda Midori; Schneider,Patricia; Aleixo,Alexandre; Schneider,Maria Paula; Santos,Fabrício R.; Mello,Claudio V.; Miyaki,Cristina; Vasconcelos,Ana Tereza R.; Prosdocimi,Francisco.
Abstract Amazon parrots are long-lived birds with highly developed cognitive skills, including vocal learning. Several parrot mitogenomes have been sequenced, but important aspects of their organization and evolution are not fully understood or have limited experimental support. The main aim of the present study was to describe the mitogenome of the blue-fronted Amazon, Amazona aestiva, and compare it to other mitogenomes from the genus Amazona and the order Psittaciformes. We observed that mitogenomes are highly conserved among Amazon parrots, and a detailed analysis of their duplicated control regions revealed conserved blocks. Population level analyses indicated that the specimen analyzed here seems to be close to A. aestiva individuals from Bahia...

Evaluation of the importance of the porta-renal system in parrots (Amazona aestiva) MV&Z
Cruz, Mariângela Lozano; Luna, Stelio Pacca Loureiro; Castro, Gladys Bastos; Massone, Flávio; Teixeira Neto, Francisco José.
When injected in the thigh muscles of a bird, the local capillaries absorb the drug and the blood flow goes to the external iliac vein that has a porta-renal valve close to the kidney. Controlled by the autonomous nervous system, this valve can be opened or closed by the sympathetic or parasympathetic stimuli respectively. When opened, the blood flow goes to the renal vein then to the vena cava and reaches the systemic circulation. However, when the valve is closed, the blood flow goes to the renal parenchyma where it is mixed with the arterial blood. Thus, the kidney can excrete the drug that was given before it reaches the systemic circulation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of ketamine when injected into the thigh or breast...

Evidence of tutoring in the development of subsong in newly-fledged Meyer's Parrots Poicephalus meyeri Anais da ABC (AABC)
Masin,Simone; Massa,Renato; Bottoni,Luciana.
Subsongs are vocal trials uttered by young birds to practice songs. Among songbirds, subsongs are displayed by individuals in their first year of life. Studies on Zebra Finches Poephila guttata suggest that the juveniles learn their songs from a vocal tutor, their father. In this study we examine the subsongs in six captive-born Meyer's Parrots Poicephalus meyeri, from fledging time to weaning. Recordings of songs from chicks and fathers were analyzed for similarities in frequency and time parameters. With age, the subsongs of the chicks became more similar to the vocalizations of the fathers with 20% similarity rating in the first week after fledging to 100% at weaning time. Moreover, fledged chicks were exposed to a wide range of stimuli from several...

Genetic evaluation of the mating system in the blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna, Aves, Psittacidae) by DNA fingerprinting Genet. Mol. Biol.
Caparroz,Renato; Miyaki,Cristina Y.; Baker,Allan J..
More than 90% of birds are socially monogamous, although genetic studies indicate that many are often not sexually monogamous. In the present study, DNA fingerprinting was used to estimate the genetic relationships between nestlings belonging to the same broods to evaluate the mating system in the socially monogamous macaw, Ara ararauna. We found that in 10 of 11 broods investigated, the nestlings showed genetic similarity levels congruent with values expected among full-sibs, suggesting that they shared the same parents. However, in one brood, the low genetic similarity observed between nestlings could be a result of intraspecific brood parasitism, intraspecific nest competition or extra-pair paternity. These results, along with available behavioral and...

In silico identification and characterization of novel microsatellite loci for the Blue-and-yellow Macaw Ara ararauna (Linnaeus, 1758) (Psittaciformes, Psittacidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lima-Rezende,Cássia Alves; Fernandes,Gislaine Aparecida; Silva,Helder Elias da; Dobkowski-Marinho,Sarah; Santos,Victor Fernandes; Rodrigues,Fernando Pacheco; Caparroz,Renato.
Abstract The illegal trade is a major threat to many bird species, and parrots are common victims of this activity. Domestic and international pet markets are interested on different parrot species, such as the Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna). This South American macaw is not globally threatened, but is under protection from over-exploitation. This study aimed to identify and characterize novel microsatellite loci for population and parentage analysis of A. ararauna. Scaffold sequences of Ara macao available in the NCBI database were used for microsatellite searches using MsatCommander software. We tested a total of 28 loci, from which 25 were polymorphic, one was monomorphic, and two did not generated amplification products. For polymorphic loci, the...

Observations of parrots at a geophagy site in Bolivia Biota Neotropica
Mee,Allan; Denny,Rebecca; Fairclough,Keith; Pullan,Dave M.; Boyd-Wallis,Will.
Geophagy, or soil ingestion, is known from a wide range of animal taxa but is particularly common among macaws and parrots in the family Psittacidae. Current theory suggests that Neotropical parrots ingest soil to neutralize toxins in food such as seeds and unripe fruit and as a mineral supplement. Here, we document the occurrence of geophagy at a site in lowland forest in Bolivia. We recorded six species of parrot with a maximum of 1,044 birds on any one day. Aratinga weddellii, Pionus menstruus and Ara severa (maxima of 654, 337 and 108 birds respectively) were the most numerous species visiting the site. We recommend that the Valle de la Luna be afforded formal protection by incorporating the site into the nearby Parque Nacional Carrasco.

Richness, composition and detectability of Psittacidae (Aves) in three palm swamps of the Cerrado sensu lato in central Brazil RChHN
RODRIGUES,PATRÍSIA O; BORGES,MARIANA R; MELO,CELINE.
The objectives of this study were: (1) to investigate the richness and composition of the Psittacidae in palm swamps; (2) to determine if the sizes of flocks vary seasonally; (3) to compare detectability rates according to species. Psittacid communities were observed from November 2006 to November 2007 in semimonthly visits to the area using fixed-point observation. A total of 1616 individuals from eight species were registered in 199 contacts. The palm swamps were highly similar (H > 0.62), and their diversity was above 1.56. The Yellow-chevroned Parakeet was considered resident in the three palm swamps (Fr > 60 %). The White-eyed Parakeet and Red-bellied Macaw were the most abundant species in the three areas. Most of the species (n = 5) were more...

The parakeet Brotogeris tirica feeds on and disperses the fruits of the palm Syagrus romanzoffiana in Southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sazima,Ivan.
Small psittacids remain unrecorded as dispersal agents of palm fruits in Brazil. I record here the plain parakeet (Brotogeris tirica), an Atlantic forest endemic, feeding on and dispersing the fruits of the palm Syagrus romanzoffiana at Ubatuba, northern coast of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil. The birds removed the fruit and carried it away from the mother-tree in about 40% of the feeding records. While perched on trees and shrubs of the understorey, the parakeets removed and ingested most of the mesocarp, dropping the partly consumed fruit. As the parakeets damaged no the embryo and may feed at a distance from the mother-tree, they act as primary dispersal agents. This is the first substantiated record of a small Neotropical psittacid as a stomatochorous...
